Magic (the art of becoming one with all)

Magic is name given to the Mages unique ability to bend the laws of nature to will and grant them superhuman powers and abilities. It takes years of training for someone to learn how to use magic and the following is an account of how Mages would summarise it to a non user, first lets start with the Principles of Magic.

The Principles of Magic are built upon the Union of Otherworld (Spirit world) and Midgard (Material world), at the heart of this principle is the Trinity of Being. The trinity is categorised as the Mind, the Body, and the Soul. The mind gives the spirit shape, the body is the spirits engine, and the Soul is the gate through which the spirit flows. Spirit energy (otherwise known as Aether) is found within all living things but few are able to sense and interact with this energy naturally, this is where the process of casting magic begins.

To understand how to cast Magic one must understand the 5 elements of Midgard, Air, Fire, Water, Earth, and Aether (Spirit). The five elements are attributed to one’s own skills and thoughts, one must have great mental discipline to cast even basic spells in magic. Aether is the basis for all magic and is the only element that cannot be used as a medium. It has no true form so it cannot exist in Midgard without a powerful mind to guide it. We call these people Mages.

In order to cast a spell a Mage must give the Aether form. This form must correspond with one of the four Midgard elements. All Midgard elements are infused with a unique spiritual wavelength that a mage can resonate with provided they are compatible. In essence one’s personality also has affect on what element you can use as a medium. This allows the mage to manipulate and shape the element to into any form that their imagination can conjure, provided they have enough Aether to power the spell (the greater the spell the greater the cost). Once the Aether is takes a form the Mage can shape into any form he wills, this means the Mage can even give himself/herself the properties of the element (Iron Flesh, Sonic Speed, liquid bones, boiling touch, etc). In the essence the only limits in magic are one’s of the castor’s own mind.

Witch Hunters

Following the destruction of his village at the hands of what he thought were Mages, the man who would become the Witch Hunter General swore a mighty oath of vengeance upon all wielded magic.

He waded from town to town preaching his mad gospel of hatred and doom to anyone who would listen and begged them to join him. The fallout from the disaster gave him a vast following of both peasants and nobles who were willing to fulfil his dreams of genocide. Pooling their resources they soon had an entire army of operatives.

In order to effectively combat the power of Mages the Witch Hunters developed specialised weapons that harnessed Aether. These weapons came to be known as Witch Arms, or simply Arms for short.

Rouge Forge Masters constructed these weapons for the promise of plundering the Mage clans libraries. The Arms are constructed from a unique substance called Arcanium, which is extreamly susceptible to Aether. This metal reacts to the Aether inherent in all living things and shapes itself according to the wielders desires and skills. Powerful runes can be inscribed into the metal to further enhance the Aether and turn the material into a weapon.

Google Friday Preparing the Pitch

For this practice I decided to write a pilot episode script for an idea that I have been dwelling on for a least a year and a half now, my Ouroboros Saga. Google Friday has presented me with an opportunity to pitch my idea in a professional method a receive constructive feedback. I decided that I would structure this project the same way I produced my script for 162MC, start with a Pitch, followed by an Outline, then a Treatment, an finally the script itself.

I went online to search for some information on pitching an animated feature and I found “Six Common Pitfalls Of An Animation Pitch” (ChrisOatley n.d). Chris Oatley the author of the site has worked for Disney as a character designer. His site is meant to advise young artists but this particular referred to pitching an idea for an animated show. Out of the six pitfalls listed the first two stud out to me the most and I would like to elaborate on how they affected my pitch.

1.”The originality of any story can be enhanced, if not entirely secured with an original character.

This aspect in particular has troubled me, of all the aspects of storytelling I have struggled with writing characters the most. At its heart my story is focussed the two main leads Tyra and Alfred and their struggles to survive in a world where they are being hunted. They have backstories but I still struggle to define their personalities. For example Tyra is an energetic tomboy who enjoys Heroic epics and aspires to like the heroes in them. I have been told that i need to flesh the characters out as much as possible, one of my fellow students gave a character sheet to fill out, which still gives me heart ache.

It feels that I am not doing enough to flesh out my characters and how the plot will affect them.

2. “To write a good pitch, you have to have work out the details of the story.

I had a lot ideas for potential stories as well as a overall story arc. I thought about the Mages role as protectors of both mortals (I use this term because their are races other than humans whom the term humanity could apply to) and magical spirits and beasts. The Witch Hunters are meant to be Anti-magic and so they have wiped out the Mage clans and upset the balance between mortals and the magical world. This in of itself opens the door to a number of scenarios where the heroes have to protect both factions from each other, this is where I can play with the morality a bit. For instance what if a village comes under attack from Giants? The heroes step in but the giants are just animals looking for food because they’ve been driven out of their natural habitat. This is the kind of thing I want to write for the plots of this series.

Google Friday – Outline

After making my Pitch I will establish the basic skeleton for the events that will transpire in my script.

Seq. 01- page 01-02 Whats a Hero?

Tyra is sitting against a tree reading a book, she attempts to start a conversation with Alfred who is fishing at an adjacent river. Alfred calmly asks her to quiet lest she scare the fish away. She proceeds to climb the tree and leap into the river and catches two fish with her bare hands. Alfred points out that she has scared all the fish away and now they won’t bite so they decide to go to a nearby market to get fish.

Seq. 02-page 03-06 Market Chase

Tyra and Alfred walk into Town, while on route Alfred thinks he sees some unusual activity in the woods. While in Town Alfred visits the Fishmonger while Tyra heads towards a book store. On the way she bumps into some children, they steal her bag and money. She chases them all over town as the children pass the bag among them. She eventually catches the bag but gives some of her coins to the kids as thanks for the challenge.

Seq. 03-page 07-11 Hostage Crisis

Tyra reunites with Alfred as they hitch a ride on horse cart thats heading in their direction. Along the way they are stopped by a gang of Highwaymen. Tensions rise as the thugs rob the people on the cart, when a young child refuses to hand over her locket a thug grabs her and the child”s mother assaults him. She is quickly detained and the leader of the Highwaymen steps forward. He states that he will “make an example of this one”. When he attempts to shoot a her Tyra and Alfred use their magic in incapacitate him then they turn attention to his gang and beat them up. Having exposed themselves to civilians Tyra and Alfred flee into the woods.

Seq. 04-page 12-14 Grounded

The two kids return to their home, a mansion hidden in the woods behind powerful illusions. When they arrive their Master knows that they have used magic because he can sense the residual Aether on them. Tyra and Alfred explain what happened and the Master refrains from severe punishment, instead he grounds them for a month. He then tells they made the right choice to use their power to protect the innocent.

Seq. 05-page 15 The Hunt begins

Word reaches a dark figure that magic user sightings have been reported in his territory, he orders his subordinates to prepare for a hunt.

Seq. 06-page 16-18 Confrontation

A week has passed and the kids are pacing around the mansion bored. Outside the Master is leaving town with supplies when passes by a man leaning against a tree, the mysterious man introduces himself as Cain Helmsley and accuses the Master of being a Witch. The Master ignores him at first but then Helmsley reveals how his men have been tailing him for the past four days and they gathered all the proof they need. The Master informs him that he has already knows where Helmsley’s men are and knocks them all out with stone pillars when he taps his foot. Helmsley then attacks the Master with his weapon, Witch Arms Reckoner.

Seq. 07-page 19-23 Regrets

Tyra and Alfred spot a beam of light shoot up from the forest and run to investigate. The Master is still fighting Helmsley whom is gaining the upper hand thanks to his magic weapon. The Master attempts to flee but Helmsley cuts him off by throwing Arms Reckoner and controlling it remotely in midair to cut off any escape route. He proceeds to taunt his prey by telling he should surrender in order to ensure his students receive a formal execution, this drives the Master over the edge and he attacks Helmsley full force. He proceeds to overpower the Witch Hunter and pin him down. Tyra and Alfred arrive on the scene and Helmsley throws Reckoner at them, the Master moves in the way and takes the hit for them.

Google Fridays – The Pitch

(Not sure whether to Pitch just the one episode or the whole series)

In the fantasy of Morrow magic has been outlawed. Tyra and Alfred are two young mages living in hiding with their teacher Aethelred. However their seclusion is broken when a bandit attack on their home village forces them to use their powers, which exposes them to the world and makes them targets for the sinister Witch Hunter cult.
