Observational documentary

Observational documentaries are where the documentary makers do not interact with their subjects. The only they play is record what is happening and lets events play out.

The aim of an observational documentary is to observe the world as it happens.

the key features of an observational documentary are;

  • No voiceover
  • No presenter
  • No interviews
  • No music
  • No Non-diegetic sound
  • No re-enactments
  • the viewer decides the significance of what they’re saying

an example of a famous observational documentarian is Don Allen Pennebaker
